Uncomfortable opinion: neither Liam Hemsworth nor Chris Hemsworth is worth a damn as an actor. They are both beefcakes who mostly sleepwalk their way through their roles. But I’ve always thought that Liam is the “hot Hemsworth,” and I actually think Liam is the more watchable, compelling Hemsworth. So I was happy to see Liam on the cover of July’s GQ Australia. He’s promoting Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the wildly popular ‘90s film Independence Day. Unfortunately for all involved, Liam spends most of the interview bitching about fame and the attention he gets for being back with Miley Cyrus. Whom he doesn’t even mention by name.
He doesn’t listen to the gossip: “I don’t read or listen to the press – and these days I don’t base my decisions on it at all. I base all my decisions on what’s happening in front of me and I’m much happier by doing that.”
He has a huge spread in Malibu: “Living here is just so much better for my mind… I grew up by the beach, surfing, and I’m much more conditioned to that sort of lifestyle… I wanted to get back to the beach, I needed it, to be by the water and to be able to go surfing.” Miley, too, has recently entered Malibu’s 90265 postcode – said to have purchased the property adjacent to his.
Meeting Miley when he was 20: “I guess when I feel something, then I just feel it and I go for it. I make my decisions about what’s going to make me happy, what I think is right and what I want to do – and I don’t worry too much outside of that.”
Splitting with Miley in 2013: “Of course it was hard, man. But at the time we were going in different directions and it’s just what needed to happen. We were both super young and it was a good decision at the time – we both needed that.”
Where he is with Miley now: “People will figure it out, they already have… They’re not dumb.”
The fame that came with the Hunger Games franchise made him retreat: “Definitely – especially when you start to first experience the paparazzi bulls–t. You’re less inclined to go to public places.”
I sort of stopped covering the back-and-forth drama between Liam and Miley because it was pissing me off. I think whatever happened between Liam and Miley back in 2013 really messed her up, and I think she really loved him. When they got back together late last year, the narrative was “Miley is going to settle down now that she’s back with Liam” and “Miley had to change to earn Liam’s love again.” Is that what really happened? I have no idea. But I do think that Liam had conditions and Miley was still so hung up on him, she would do anything for him. And that’s not a great basis for a relationship of equals. I guess I’m just worried that Liam is secretly a douchebag who “blames” Miley for being famous (or more famous than Liam). Does that make sense? Eh.
